#doctor who #jack harkness #john barrowman #gay aliensOk, so for context, my music taste is a mess and it’s all over the place. I like different genres, some more popular and mainstream and some more alternative. This year (and the last one) I watched eurovision with my family, who tends to have a more traditional taste in music and by that I mean they tend to like the ballads and more generic pop music.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! Music taste is a very personal thing and to each their own.
My problem is that every single year, without fail, the same argument rises. This year’s targets were mostly Finland and Germany (I think they didnt criticize Croatia because they didn’t see it XD). I think you can see where this is going…
When I don’t like a song, I don’t like it. I might make a “snooze fest” joke but I understand that some people might be into it. What annoys me is that every single time a more alternative song comes on (this year, metal took the brunt of it) they are always criticizes with “This is not music, this is just screaming” or “I can’t believe what this contest has become… back in ny day, we took real music produced by prestigious musicians to eurovision”
And, oh boy, how I HATE that. I swear I just get so riled up…
First of all, there is talent and skill involved in making metal music. METAL MUSIC IS STILL MUSIC. It might not be your type of music, but don’t discredit the artists that take their time to make it, to write the lyrics, produce the beat… (idk what it takes to make a music).
It annoys me how close minded some people are that they can’t even recognize that just because it’s not your type of music, it doesn’t mean it’s not music! Metal is not just screaming to the mic. What is so hard to understand about that?
Besides, you can argue that it takes more talent to make those songs that tiktok song n14827.
And don’t get me started with the “back in my day argument”. Like perhaps back in your day there weren’t all these music styles to choose from or perhaps they existed, but their chance to take part in ESC was denied.
Besides, the appearance of more styles reflects the change of audience, the way their tastes change and how the ESC fandom has been growing and I think that’s beautiful. The whole point of ESC (at least for me) is to celebrate diversity. It’s to get exposed to new genres and new artists and expand your music horizons.
However, no matter how much I try to explain it, it always reverts back to “oh but the public now can’t recognize good music” or “ik the styles have changed but, it’s not my thing and therefore it’s bad” or “it was better before, not it’s just a circus”
I swear, I cant argue with them if they don’t want to listen. I won’t even start on the styling and clothes of these acts because honestly…
Metal can be good music and surprise, surprise, ballads and pop songs can be crappy music. The genre doesnt dictate the quality of the music. The music dictates the quality of the music
Lord of the Lost did a cover of Cha Cha Cha and now my life is complete
Iconic 2nd place songs that are more remembered than the 1st one
Trying to process my thoughts about last night in the form of a tumblr post...
Firstly, which songs are stuck in my head today? Well, Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä (Finland), natch, but also Promise by Voyager (Australia), and Who the hell is Edgar? by Teya and Selena (Austria)
Croatia's Let 3 made it to the left of the board! Yesss!
I'd normally be the first person to criticise the BBC, but I actually feel they did a good job considering. Admittedly my expectations going into this were kinda low, but they didn't make it too, erm, BBC 😅
Also, Hannah Waddingham. New favourite Eurovision presenter. Clearly feeling very protective of Julia Sanina. Presence, crowd control ("We don't boo in this house"). Queen.
Abolishing the jury vote from the semi-finals was a big success. Not all of my favourites got through (sorry Iceland 😢 ), but we had some amazing performers reach the finals that I'm not convinced would have in previous years.
There were a number of artists whos performances in the final were not as good as in the semis... I'm thinking particularly Serbia and Australia, which were two of my favourites coming into the final.
Why did Germany and Spain score so badly? I keep telling myself that part of the answer to that is the old thing about the way the points work, if a song is everyone's 11th favourate out of the 26 entries, it'll get zero points, but still... I feel these were objectively two of the best performances of the night, both technically and in terms of everything else. Still very annoyed by this, they were two of my favourites. At least no-one got nil points this year.
On a related note, who was voting for Israel and Poland?! I know that musical taste is a personal thing (believe me, I know :D ) but Poland's song had no energy to it, and the highlight picked for Iceland was the dance break, with no singing...
I'm not sure what else I can add about the winner/second place that hasn't already been said. We love out green cha cha cha-ing blorbo. Europe loves him. The legend of Käärijä will live on!
Related, I felt that Loreen's performance in the reprise was much better than during the main part of the competition... what happened?
Norway put in a very technical performance, and I really want to like it, but as I've been saying all week, there wasn't enough texture, not enough light and shade to the song as it was peformed. We were also missing the growl in Alessandra's vocals from the semi.
Where was the audience interaction? I get that the focus is always going to be getting votes from home, so a lot of the staging will focus on that, but it's still a live music event, and it was disappointing to only notice Belgium and Germany playing to the crowd.
I've yet to listen to the recorded versions of the songs yet (that's my lunch time listening this week), but from what I hear from @itseverydaybear some of the songs that didn't make a great impression in the semis sound much better. I suspect there will be some sleeper hits in there...
Anyhow, catch you later, just going to listen to The HARDKISS and Jann (Poland televoter's choice to represent them this year - once again for those at the back, time to abolish juries...!)
As a bonus, here's Lord of the Lost covering Queen of Kings (they have even more covers on their youtube chanel, it's worth a look!)
Last night’s final left such a bitter taste in my mouth. Dont get me wrong there were a lot of good entries, but I felt like everyone deserved so much more.
I won’t start on the whole finland and sweeden situation because you just need to scroll for 5 seconds on the eurovision tag to see people’s opinions.
I’m talking about everyone else. Like honestly Germany deserved so much more. Just like Spain and France. Honestly the big 5 (minus the UK, sorry babes) deserved so much more. Same with countries like Portugal (yes, I’m portuguese, so you know I’m biased, hut honestly I have no problem pointing out when we take crap songs). Portugal deserved so much more. Albania! Moldova! What was going on with the public and the juri’s votes?
(Thank god Croatia got the love it deserved from the public)
And then you have countries like Israel?!?! HOW? How did this tiktok song if tiktok was around 2014-2015 get so many points? Like please someone explain it to me? (Like legit @me and explain it to me. Am I missing something?)
looking back on what happened, i think what annoys me the most is that if any other country had submitted that song they wouldn't have won
like, if it was the Estonian female soloist who performed that song, she wouldn't have won. Loreen only won because she's Loreen, and I don't feel like that's fair to any of the other competitors
You said it, thank you.
Like imo, the song wasn't bad. It just got the hype it got because of Loreen, who, btw, has one Eurovision in 2012 which I think it's just overall unfair for other competitors
Also keep in mind that next year it’s 2024, exactly 50 years after 1974, when ABBA won. It makes sense that the jury wanted Sweden to win so that next year the contest can be hosted in Sweden and therefore pay tribute to ABBA in their country
Ik!!! When I heard that after sweeden got all those points I was just 🤨. Like something wasn’t right. I hope there was no rigging of the votes or pressure on the juri’s to vote sweeden because of that but it sure feels suspicious.
